The Larnaca school board has secured emergency funding from the Ministry of Education to carry out a series of infrastructure and improvement projects across the city’s schools.

The works include the construction of shelters, installation of air-conditioning, and closed-circuit television systems in kindergartens, primary, secondary, and high schools, the board confirmed.

Projects will begin immediately with maintenance at Ayios Georgios high school and the construction of a large shelter for the basketball and volleyball courts at the Pancyprian high school of Larnaca, which currently has no multipurpose hall or covered spaces. Improvements will also take place at Prodromos primary school, while a basketball court will be built at Kamara primary school.

Kamara primary school, one of the largest in Larnaca, currently lacks a sports field. A prefabricated hall has been installed on its grounds to meet the needs of the local public kindergarten.

A large shelter will also be constructed at Faneromeni gymnasium, which similarly has no multipurpose hall or other covered areas. The school board will carry out additional improvements to the playground and courts at Ayios Ioannis primary school, build a shelter at Livadia first public kindergarten, and install two smaller shelters at other schools in the city.

The board receives frequent requests for new shelters. It has now established selection criteria and will immediately choose two schools for construction.
Through the Cyprus Sports Organisation’s (ΚΟΑ) social sports programme, a futsal court will be built at one school in Larnaca. Criteria for sports facility upgrades have also been set, and one school will be selected for this work.

Funding will also cover repairs to schools in need of urgent maintenance, including general upkeep at Sotirοs-Toula Charalambous primary school, and the refurbishment of multipurpose halls at Livadia high school and Petrakis Kyprianou gymnasium.

Major ongoing projects include seismic and energy upgrades at Evryviadio gymnasium and Drosia gymnasium, floor extensions and shelter construction at Ayios Spyridonas special school, and the building of a futsal court and changing rooms at Sotiras primary school.

Other works continuing include the installation of metal fences and railings, the creation of an outdoor gym for calisthenics at Pancyprian high school, and the near-completion of a gym at Vergina high school for Larnaca’s sports schools.

Air-conditioning will be operational in 15 schools before the end of the school year, with plans underway for the remaining schools in Larnaca city and district. CCTV cameras will be installed in eight additional schools by mid-February, bringing the total to 12 operational schools.

Work on the Pancyprian high school museum continues. Engineering teams, including mechanical, electrical, and civil engineers, have been appointed, along with a team of museum specialists and designers.

The Larnaca school board stated that these projects reflect its commitment to strategic planning and the ongoing improvement of educational facilities in the city.
